Winter Storm 2026 update 01.31.26

Posted on January 31, 2026 at 9:25 PM by Jennifer Griffith

Hey Olive Branch!

Today is Saturday, January 31st.

Roadway Conditions

Main Roadways and main state highways are pretty clear. Black Ice is being reported on multiple roadways throughout tonightOBPD’s Inclement weather policy remains in effect.

...But! We’re still going.

Our City Public Works and Fleet Services departments have worked since Winter Storm Fern arrived on Saturday, January 24th.

Since 01/24/26:

  • 200 miles of roadway driven each day since Saturday, January 24th.
  • 7,700 pounds of ice melt
  • 11,000 pounds of sand
  • 78,400 pounds of Ag-Rock

And we’re not stopping until we’re done.

They're here and they continuing to treat our roadways.

With layers of ice that feels very much like concrete combined with continued temperatures below freezing, progress has been slow, but we won’t stop until we’re done.  We are adding additional contractors to assist with clearing residential roadways for the safety of our residents, our emergency services, and so that USPS and Waste Connections can safely resume service once they are able.

We thank you for your patience. If you see our team on roadways, please give them space as they work.  Help us help you by driving slow, give room for vehicles around you, and give yourself plenty of time to stop.

Thank you Public Works

Weather Conditions

Dangerously cold temperatures are expected this weekend, starting tonight (1/30/26) and lasting through noon Sunday (2/1/26). Wind chills for many across the state will be near or below zero. We do have sunshine in the forecast and this will still help things to continue to thaw out.

Our City Warming Shelter remains available for those in need at 9549 Pigeon Roost Road on the campus of Olive Branch Elementary.

Garbage Collection

The City of Olive Branch is working closely with Waste Connections to monitor weather conditions to resume Garbage and Recycling Collection. Currently, Waste Connections is still assessing when they can safely resume service to our City. A decision will be made Sunday evening.

In the meantime, Waste Connections will be placing a dumpster for use on Monday. This location will be shared upon final confirmation over the weekend.

Waste Connections has shared that they will do their best to pick up overflow once they are able to resume service safely. If possible, please place as much bagged garbage inside your cart as possible. Any additional overflow should be bagged and placed on or near your carts.

Due to inclement weather, Waste Connections was unable to service routes on Saturday, January 24th through Friday January 30th.

Remember:

- check on your friends and neighbors, especially vulnerable adults and children.

- bring your pets inside. If you are cold, they are too.

- insulate your pipes and leave water dripping to prevent freezing

- stay off frozen ponds, lakes, and creeks! The ice is NOT thick enough to support ANY weight.

-clear off your hood, roof, and windshield of your vehicle BEFORE driving.

-monitor ice buildup and be mindful of potential structural failure. Slanted roofs may have solid sheets of ice, that may move as they melt.

We appreciate your continued patience as we navigate this together.
