City of Olive Branch Announces New Director of Planning and Development

During the October 21st Board of Aldermen meeting, Mayor Ken Adams announced the promotion of Dr. Venard “Asong” Asongayi to the role of Director of Planning and Development. 

Dr. Asongayi brings a strong academic and extensive professional experience to his new role. He holds a bachelor degree in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) from the University of Buea in Cameroon and another bachelor degree in Philosophy (B. Phil.) from Pontifical Urban University, located in Rome, Italy. He also holds dual master’s degrees from East Tennessee State University (ETSU): a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) with concentration in Planning and Development. Earlier this year, he graduated with a Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) from West Chester University, Pennsylvania. 

Passionate about land use planning and community development, Dr. Asongayi focused his doctoral dissertation on “Public Value: The Viability of an Anchor for the Design of Adaptive Zoning Regulations.” He is also the author of two books regarding  land use regulations that are under review for publication. 

Dr. Asongayi is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and holds certification as a Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM). He is also actively pursuing certification as a Certified Public Manager (CPM).

Dr. Asongayi’s professional planning and development experience spans several U.S. cities.  After completing a local government planning internship in Washington County, Tennessee, Dr. Asongayi worked with NASA DEVELOP in Wise County, Virginia. He later served as Town Planner and Planning Director for the Town of Greeneville, Tennessee. In 2017, he became Development Coordinator and National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Coordinator for the City of Johnson City, Tennessee.

Since joining the City of Olive Branch in October 2020 as Assistant Director of Planning and Development, Dr. Asongayi has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication. He is a two-time recipient of the Mayor’s Award, honoring employees who go above and beyond in service to the City.

Mayor Adams expressed confidence in Dr. Asongayi’s ability to lead the department, citing his professionalism, expertise, and commitment to the community.
